Exploring the Markets of San Cristobal, Mexico

While in San Cristobal we all wanted to explore the markets.  The first market that we visited was focused on selling products that were most appealing to visiting tourists.  We saw numerous dream catchers, hats and other souvenirs for the typical tourist.  Even though we didn’t want to purchase any of the products we were impressed with the unique designs. Some of the jewelry was made with seeds from popular fruits and trees of the area, which we thought was creative but not exactly our style.

As we left the tourist market we were on a hunt to find where the locals shopped.  The further out of town we were, the closer we felt we were getting. And the further out of the town we got, the more stares we received as well. We were use to this, especially after living in Masaya & traveling to small Mayan villages around Lake Atitlan, but it still never provided us with a comforting feeling.

We finally found the market a few miles away from the center of town.  There were numerous stands selling everything from fruit to shoes to beans to flowers and everything else in between.

We explored keeping a close eye on all members of the group and our belongings. Quinn and I looked at each other realizing that this is where we would be shopping if we were to live in San Cristobal for an extended period of time.

Next to the large local market was a massive super market where all of the same goods could be purchased, yet to our surprise everyone still choose to flood the market. This is, of course, unlike in the United States where corporate markets rule over mom and pop stands and shops. We loved it. We bought unique fruits from wheel barrels, freshly fried doughnuts and more local fresh treats.

We travel to explore and learn more about the each culture we expose ourselves to so that we can learn more about the big picture: the world in its entirety. If we were to just stay in our box, then we would be only able to take the opportunities that we use in our daily life around us. You only know what you know, so we figure it’s best for us learn as much as possible about everything.

That’s our vision, our life and what Life Out of the Box is all about. We don’t expect to know it all but we do expect to continue to grow from our experiences that we create by stepping out of our comfort zone. Exploring this local market, despite feeling a bit out of place, was important for us to do because it gave us another experience to take in and help us understand a new part of the world we didn’t know about even just the day before.

Authentic Mexican treats aren’t the only thing you’ll gain from taking the path less traveled and going to the local market–so get out there and try it all.
