LOOTB Presents to Universities

Our goal in the USA was to spread LOOTB in person to as many people as possible. After being back in the states for a few weeks we realized that there were a lot of other people who wanted the same things as us: to go after their dreams, explore the world and help others in need to achieve their dreams as well. We wanted to speak directly to these people and motivate them to live their Life Out of the Box, so we decided that an effective way to do this was to hit the road and give live presentations to students at universities.

We were in close contact with the Rotary Club of Monterey, who suggested that we reach out to the Rotaract Clubs of each university we went to as our message would be very much aligned with the club’s mission. Rotaract Clubs are essentially pre-Rotary Clubs for people aged 18-30 years old that focus on helping those in need around the world by using the wonderful motto “service before self.” LOOTB and Rotaract Clubs were a perfect match and we couldn’t wait to share our story with as many clubs and students as we could.

We scheduled presentations with Rotaract Clubs all over the west coast and our first one was at California State University of Monterey Bay (CSUMB). Our intention with the presentation was to simply inspire the students and show them that they CAN make a difference in the world and can do that in their own way.

We wanted to show them photos and videos of our experiences to connect them with our story, LOOTB and the cultures of these countries in Central America that we had fallen in love with. It’s not always easy to get out there and live the life you truly want to, but we wanted to emphasize that if we did it, then so could they. The mission of Life Out of the Box is to help others achieve their dreams and that’s exactly what we wanted to do with these university students.

The powerpoint presentation was all set up with the projector in the lecture hall and we were ready. Students began to fill the seats. Hands were jittery, but we were as ready as we could be for the presentation. This was our story and we were excited to finally be able to share it with people in person. A lot had happened in just a year.

At the end of it we took a deep breath and smiled. The students lined up to ask us questions about how we did what we did and how they could do it too. We set up coffee dates with some students and gave our email to everyone so that they could contact us with more detailed questions. The entire experience was amazing and we were both so happy with how well received our presentation was.

After that, we were hooked. Our goal here was clear and simple now: to keep spreading the LOOTB message and motivate more students to go after their dreams and be the change they want to see in the world. We couldn’t wait to hit the road again and give presentations to UC Berkeley, UC Davis (Quinn’s alma mater!), UC Santa Cruz, Monterey Institute of International Studies and California State University of Sacramento. Spreading Life Out of the Box in the USA was going to be great.

  1. Great idea hitting the colleges! I agree with the comment about presenting to high schools too. The earlier you get out this message the better! Teens, young adults, (everyone really) need to realize that if you follow the masses down the normal road you’ll get normal results. How boring is that! Love LOOTB!

    • Thanks Jared!! We completely agree–the earlier the better. It’s important to encourage the youth to chase their dreams and to take the road less traveled. Thanks so much for your support in what we’re doing πŸ™‚
