We love our home city San Francisco and all of the craziness that comes with it–so when we heard from all of the English locals that Brighton was the “San Francisco of England” we knew we had to go check it out. Jonathon’s cousin gave us a lift into the city as well as a quick run down of all the awesome things that this artsy place had to offer. Brighton was known for its street art throughout the city and we couldn’t wait to check it out.

We connected with the art in Brighton more than any other art in England so far. Sure, we felt inspiration from the historical art we found all throughout London—but this kind of art was more us. Each piece of art on the buildings we saw made a statement. They were each young, unique, different, strange, innovative and modern. We couldn’t stop starring at them all.

They were rebellious and us entrepreneurs love pretty much anything that goes against the norm because that’s what we do every day. This art pushed beyond the norm and made people think out of the box on what art really is. The fact that a piece of graffiti by Banksy was framed and being protected was quite a statement.

We really appreciated the guerilla marketing techniques these artists use as they’re very entrepreneurial, cheap and so in your face that you can’t ignore them.

We thought it was great that the people of Brighton not only embrace this entrepreneurial mindset that the street art in the streets represents, but they actually encourage it. It’s similar to the way the Bay Area embraces entrepreneurs and we started to understand why people here called Brighton the San Francisco of England.

Along with the art exhibits outside in the streets of Brighton are also several art galleries, small artisan shops, skate shops, used bookstores and even old used music record stores. As we walked up and down the lanes we walked into several unique shops that had the same artsy indie vibe as the others.

One of our favorite shops we visited was a Moroccan goods shop that a local guy ran. We loved the beautiful handmade high quality products he had that reflected Morocco. We were inspired by the entire store and were very intrigued by this new culture. It was one of the many great side effects of exploring the diverse shops in the lanes that day.

We headed out towards the ocean that cold rainy day to take in everything we had just seen. Our minds were going a million miles a minute as we comprehended our day, so the gray hazy oceanfront was just what we needed to calm us both.

We were so excited by the thoughts we had for LOOTB thanks to the street art and new vibrant cultures we had just experienced in Brighton. The next day we were headed off to a new country in Europe and were eager to see what we would learn there as well. One thing we did know was that big changes were in store very soon for us and Life Out of the Box.

  1. My sister gave me a book on San Francisco street art, specifically of the Mission, for Christmas. I can see why Brighton reminds you of San Fran.

  3. Some might think of this street arts as the acts of vandals but I tend to agree with you, it is an art form and to see that these street arts carry some culture statement (seeing something from the eyes of the young people) is an eye opener.

Plus, it is beautiful and to protect them is the right thing to do 🙂
