The Business

This is Life Out of the Box video in Monte Alban, Oaxaca, Mexico

What’s up guys, we’re Quinn & Jonathon. In 2012 we left everything in California to create the social venture Life Out of the Box (LOOTB) in developing countries.

Here’s how it works:

1. You purchase a handmade LOOTB bracelet by our artisans in either Nicaragua, Guatemala or Morocco from our online store Each bracelet is one-of-a-kind because it has a unique number stamped on the LOOTB leather tag.

2. This bracelet gives a child in need school supplies.

3. You actually get to see & learn about the child that you gave school supplies to through your purchase by either looking up your number on our LOOTB Gives site or through the personal email we send you after you make your order.

4. The more bracelets you buy, the more children you give school supplies to.

We are both very connected to education and believe that it’s the best place to start in helping developing countries. It’s the root of where change can start–where kids can learn and develop their own skills to improve their country’s economy, help their families and go on to teach the next generation. Our goal is to give kids the tools they need to educate themselves, live their own Life Out of the Box and pursue their biggest dreams. So far we’ve given to thousands of children throughout Central America & Northern Africa.

As we travel around the world to various countries looking for new handmade products to develop with local artisans, we continue to work with various non-profit organizations to find out how we can further make the biggest difference in each community we work in. To learn more about the awesome organizations we’ve worked with, check out “Giving Partners” in the main menu above. Overall, our journey has been quite the exciting adventure and we hope that you follow along with us in our pursuit of living Life Out of the Box. Below is a video of us creating Life Out of the Box in Central America:

Life Out of the Box has two main goals:

1. To inspire people to live their ideal life, go global and make their dreams come true by living Life Out of the Box

2. To give others in developing countries the same opportunity to live a better life by giving an educational product back to them for every product sold

  1. I will be mentioning you and your site as an example to business owners that I interact with that complain at how things don’t just come easy for them. Thank you for setting an example for people of all ages all over the world to make things happen and live outside of the box. I completely agree with your business model as that is a great way to sustain while remaining committed to a cause!

      All our best,
      Quinn & Jonathon

  3. Thank you for visiting my website, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed looking around yours. I am going to the Subscribe button now. 😉 God bless what you two are doing!

  4. “Helping others around the world is a higher priority to our generation than any before because we live in a world that is more globally connected than ever.” great quote.

Your blog and business is so inspiring.

  5. What a wonderful thing you are doing. I hope that the impact you are making in Nicaragua reaches very far. And thanks for liking my blog post. I feel like we are living a bit of that “life out of the box” moment as well.

  6. Congratulations on your wonderful adventure and business project. You have obviously put a great deal of thought into this and I am look forward to reading more and to following your experiences and successes. The world can use more folks like you. Well done!

  7. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I am happy it led me to yours. That is a great ambition you have here and a fantastic business model (product for product). To set up a business with the prime motive of social benefit is especially challenging. Our entire economic systems are built around the money profit motive. It is refreshing and inspiring to see how you guys are doing your best to make the world a better place.

  8. I absolutely love it! Love what you’re about, what you’re doing, and especially the philosophy behind it. I’m honored to have you notice my blog on your journey. I just came back from a TEDxYouth event (blog to follow) and I think you guys would be a great fit. Have you ever done a TEDx Talk?

    • We have not done a Tedx talk but it looks like a wonderful event. Thank you for suggesting that to us. We will continue to look more into the opportunity. Thanks again for the thoughtful comment.

  9. Your project is simply awesome!
I’m from Costa Rica and I we have some stereotypes with the “gringos” like that they come to our countries only to spend some money, see some rainforest and surfing. Sometimes I thought that we are their tropical backyard.
Just to be clear, I’m not against that your people come to our countries, it’s good to the local economy and we are mostly touristic countries. The thing that bothers me is the perspective that they have of us.
But you guys, are showing that it is possible do a little more. I know that is difficult! The government, the burocracy, the same people’s idiosyncrasy sometimes don’t allow us to develop. But with little steps, we all are building a better future.
Keep going with your project and don’t hesitate if need some help.

P.S. Sorry for my poor English.

    • Thatnk you for your comment. We understand what you are saying completely (your English seems very good). We will keep going with our project. If we need anything we know how to reach you. Thanks again!

  11. Thanks for checking out my blog , I’m so glad it took me to yours!! You probably already know how incredibly inspiring your projects, I can’t wait to hear more details about your business model and how it develops, I think it could set a great example not only in developing economies but also in the “Old World” were poverty is stricking back because of the recession and some family & kids lack the basics. This recession originated from something that’s directly opposite to what you are doing, your message should be spread so that more & more start-upper take your example! 🙂

    • That’s a wonderful comment. It is also a very interesting point of view about the recession. I never thought of that. We are doing our best to spread our message. But it is so motivating for us when we get awesome comments like yours. Thank you very very much.

  12. Thank you for the visit to my blog as it brought me to yours. What you two are doing is a wonderful thing. Good luck in all your endeavors and I look forward to following your progress.

  17. I’ve found your blog very intriguing and I’d like to know more about your guys. I am from Nicaragua (living in Boston at the moment but heading home for the holidays –yeyyy!) and I have a few friends that have moved from the US to Nicaragua to work for NGOs that support different communities across the country. We should meet!

  21. Hi there, what an interesting blog and an interesting country. I lived in Mozambique and it sounds a lot like Nicaragua except probably more poor. I like your concept of a donation for a product in NZ we have an organisation that puts, organisations and students together with the foundation idea of “a hand up not a hand out”. All the very best with your endeavour I’ll be looking out for updates on your blog.

  22. Wow, what a wonderful concept! I wish you much success! Your business model an excellent example of making the world a better place. You’re not just “talking the talk”, you are living it. Very inspiring! I’m so happy I have found you. Happy Holidays as well!

  23. I think this is fantastic and I admire your courage and tenacity to see it through. There are so many people out there that are doing something good now and I LOVE it. If only we could get the Governments of all these countries to do the same. I applaud you.

    • Thank you for your kind compliments. We are just trying to follow our dreams while making the world a better place for others. We can only do a little compared to governments but at least we are giving it all we got. Thanks.

  24. This is definitely an awesome idea. In fact, if there is something I can do to help on the other side of the world, I l would love the opportunity. Continue rocking and hopefully you’ll be able to expand your business to other parts of the world.

    • Thank you Mike. We can always use the help mid you have any ideas of how you can assist please send us an email. We hope to share it all over the world too. Thank you so much.
