In Nicaragua, there are no public libraries. Unfortunately, therefore, kids in school have a hard time acquiring books to read both at school and at home for fun. This problem is what created the Mobile Library Project. Started by Jane, an American expat from Colorado, the library is stationed in San Juan del Sur and three days a week, every week, the library goes out to schools all over southern Nicaragua and acts as a public library where they can borrow used books.
The Biblioteca Movil reach in the community is very deep as the Library itself is a safe place for many of the local kids to do their homework, learn, read, write, get creative and do art. The library also reaches over a dozen different rural schools outside of San Juan del Sur with their mobile library project by visiting them once a week to teach them arts & crafts, read books to them and allow them to check out books.
We worked with the San Juan del Sur Library and the Wyoming Rotary Club to fix up schools outside of San Juan del Sur to make them all a better place for the kids to learn. At all of the schools we help, we also got to give all of the students school supplies thanks to the wonderful supporters of Life Out of the Box. Below is a video that captures all of the work, fun and amazing times that we had with everyone at the schools.
BIG NEWS: The San Juan del Sur Library is expanding & needs our help as they are in need of funding to keep the project going. Check out the video they made below to see what they’re in need of and if you want to help, click here to donate.
